Our Town

Western Albemarle Schools Shine - A preliminary ranking of public schools according to Virginia’s new School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF) list two of our local schools among the Top 10 statewide.

Virginia Murray Elementary, led by Principal Wendy Eckerle, was ranked as the #1 elementary school in the state and 2nd overall coming in just behind Northern Virginia’s prestigious magnet school, Thomas Jefferson High for Science and Technology.

Western Albemarle High School, led by Principal Jennifer Sublette, clocked in as the #4 high school in the state and the 6th overall.

Virginia’s new School Performance & Support Framework recently published preliminary scores for all of the state’s public schools. Crozet United tabulated rankings based on the overall scores.

All six of our local schools achieved a score of 90 points and above, earning them Virginia’s “Distinguished” designation which is defined as “schools [that] are exceeding the state’s expectation for growth, achievement, and readiness” and “schools [that] serve as models of best practices from which others learn.”

Congratulations to all the teachers, staff, and parents for earning this public recognition.  Parents, take a moment to thank a teacher today for their tireless work and advocacy for the children of our community.

Rounding out the rest of the local statewide rankings were:

- Henley Middle: #9 out of 319 middle schools

- Brownsville Elementary:  #46 out of 1,111 elementary schools

- Ivy Elementary (formerly Meriwether Lewis): #52 out of 1,111 elementary schools

- Crozet Elementary:  #161 out of 1,111 elementary schools

Tower(s) Proposed near Ednam - The owner of the 5.5-acre Weedon Office Park is exploring an opportunity to build a large apartment complex across from Birdwood Golf Course in Supervisor Jim Andrews’ district.  A preliminary application submitted to the County includes an image marked “exploratory concept draft” depicting approximately five apartment towers, each up to six stories tall (shown below).

The applicant-to-be appears to recognize the challenges such a development would pose to Crozet and Ivy commuters along Route 250, as it also depicts two new roundabouts as shown in the image below.

Many are beginning to notice the rapidly accelerating pace of large-scale development along this corridor.  In addition to land that was recently cleared at the Rt 250 bypass on-ramp to make room for a 525-unit residential development in Supervisor Diantha McKeel’s district, a 10-story apartment complex is now planned next to Moe’s BBQ in the City of Charlottesville.

The County is currently developing AC44, an update to its Comprehensive Plan that will guide land use through the year 2044.  Crozet United’s analysis shows that the County has already approved more than enough housing to accommodate its expected population growth over that time frame.

The Board of Supervisors will meet tonight, November 20th, at 6pm at the County Office Building to review a draft of the AC44 chapter regarding these and other growth issues.

Discover Crozet Takes Off! - Last week, we officially launched DiscoverCrozet.com, and the response has been fantastic! The site is already buzzing with traffic, and we’ve received fantastic feedback from people excited to have a fresh, dynamic way to search for local businesses and events.

The website will be updated every Thursday with the latest happenings, making it the perfect resource for anyone looking to explore the area. Meanwhile, our newsletter will continue to inform the community with an early look at upcoming events and local news highlights every Wednesday morning.

If you’re a local business and would like to get listed or update your photos, feel free to reach out. With the holiday season fast approaching, this is the site people will turn to when searching for things to do and places to explore.

We’re thrilled to see how Discover Crozet is already promoting the community—thank you for sharing it and being part of its success!

Crozet United is here not only to keep you informed, but it is also your platform to celebrate Crozet and the people in it.

Share your good news—like team victories, community cleanups, or any positive updates—with us. Small or big we want to share the good things happening around town.

On The Lighter Side

In June 1781, this patriot rode 40 miles through the night to warn Governor Thomas Jefferson and the General Assembly in Charlottesville of an approaching British cavalry led by Banastre Tarleton. His warning allowed the assembly to escape to Staunton.

Who made this legendary ride, often compared to Paul Revere’s?
