Our Town

Fall Foliage Update - Virginia's fall foliage season is full of surprises this year. A quick drive can take you from bare branches to brilliant displays of color. Hickory, birch, and walnut trees glow yellow, while sugar maples blaze orange, and red maples and sourwoods offer stunning reds. Higher elevations in southwest Virginia and near the West Virginia border are nearing peak, while lower areas and the Blue Ridge are still transitioning. In central and eastern Virginia, hints of red are just beginning to show on maple treetops.

For more detailed updates, check out the Virginia Department of Forestry's fall foliage guide here.

Blue Ridge Parkway Reopens - After being closed due to damage from Hurricane Helene, the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, from milepost 0 to milepost 198, has reopened on Friday, October 11. This stretch, which runs from Shenandoah National Park to Route 685 near Fancy Gap, will once again welcome visitors. Key sites like the Humpback Rocks, James River, and Peaks of Otter visitor centers, as well as the Mabry Mill Cultural Site, will resume operations. While most services have been restored, the National Park Service urges caution as trail assessments are ongoing. The remainder of the Parkway in Virginia is expected to reopen in the next two weeks, while the North Carolina section remains closed due to severe storm damage.

Up to date information can be found at the Nation park Service website.

Got Shoes?!?!? - Support Western Albemarle High School’s Future Business Leaders of America by donating gently used, worn, or new shoes to their shoe drive! Proceeds will help cover costs for state and national competition expenses. All types and sizes of shoes are welcome, including outgrown cleats and athletic shoes.

The drive runs from October 21st through December 2nd. You can drop off your donations at the main offices of WAHS, Crozet Elementary, or Henley Middle School.

Share your good news—like team victories, community cleanups, or any positive updates—with us. Small or big we want to share the good things happening around town.

On The Lighter Side
