Earth Day

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, began in 1970 as Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson's environmental education initiative, inspired by anti-Vietnam War teach-ins.

In 1969, after witnessing the Santa Barbara oil spill, Nelson envisioned nationwide environmental teach-ins to demonstrate Americans' environmental concerns. He hired Denis Hayes as national coordinator, and advertising writer Julian Koenig named it "Earth Day."

The first Earth Day saw 20 million Americans participating across 2,000 college campuses, 10,000 schools, and hundreds of communities.

Eight months later, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created, followed by landmark legislation including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, and Toxic Substances Control Act.
