Our Town
Forestland Preservation A 767 acre swath of family-owned forestland upstream of the Sugar Hollow Reservoir will be put into conservation easement thanks to a federal effort to preserve economically and ecologically significant forestlands across the nation. Now protected, the Cedar Mountain Shenandoah parcel will enhance critical habitat connectivity and climate resiliency in the Appalachian Corridor.
Local Tax Windfall Important financial conclusions can be drawn from an “informational item” buried in the agenda for today’s Board of Supervisors meeting. According to an updated financial projection for the year ending June 30th, the County now expects to collect $28M more in local taxes than it did a year ago. Of that amount, $12M was an unbudgeted surprise.
While the ink is not yet dry on next year’s budget, it now appears that the County will easily meet its projected tax collection of $380M as it is just 1% higher than last year (after controlling for the recent hikes to personal property and transient occupancy taxes). Assuming a normal rate of inflation, it's reasonable to assume that the County will beat next year’s revenue forecast by an additional $8M.
For the few of you still following along, this new information begs the questions: What should be done with the extra $20M? Can at least some of that be appropriated to Crozet infrastructure? Why did the County recently feel so pressured to cut Supervisor Pruitt’s modest request for $40K to help deserving citizens avoid eviction? What governance measures will the Board take to improve the timeliness and reliability of local tax collection forecasts?
Northern Lights Wow, did anyone catch the northern lights show this weekend? It was incredible! Mother Nature really outdid herself with those swirling colors in the sky.
Big shoutout to those of you who shared your awesome photos with us. Seriously, you made our weekend even better by letting us experience the magic through your lenses.

Water Protection Did you know that only 26% of our local streams meet Virginia’s standard for aquatic life? The County department that works with the State to improve that dismal metric is now being required to include Crozet within its service area under a state program to reduce pollution discharge into local waterways.
At an upcoming board meeting, the County will also revise its Water Protection Ordinance, the law that protects Crozet streams with 100’ buffers unless a developer buries and pipes them first. Let’s hope the Supervisors find a simple way to close that obvious loophole in this revision.
WAHS News and Notes
Baseball
Varsity reignited their offense with 16 runs over a two-game stretch against Goochland and Monticello, pushing their record to (13-4) on the season.
Lacrosse
The following is not a typo — boys Varsity has scored 70 goals over the last 4 games, giving up only 10. Any early-in-the-season hiccups are long gone for this red-hot, offensively explosive squad.
Not to be outdone, the Lady Warriors smashed its last 2 opponents (Fluvanna and Goochland) by a combined 36 goals to 4. This undefeated squad (12-0) is ready for playoff action!

Soccer
Girls varsity ran their winning streak to 7 games with consecutive
shutouts over Goochland and Orange. On May 16th, they look to avenge their lone loss at archrival Albemarle.
The boys continued their mastery of district opponents by shutting out Monticello 5-0. Jamey Williamson collected 2 more goals for this undefeated crew (13-0).
Track & Field
The annual Dogwood Classic attracts top runners from all over the state to compete at UVA’s home track. Here are a few top performers from Western:
*Lily Smith and Hazel Johnson went 1-2 in the Friday night 3200 meter — Lily shaved a whopping 30 seconds off her previous personal record (PR)!
*Raina Fitzwater placed 2nd in the pole vault among a very competitive field of vaulters.
Crozet United’s Warrior(s) of the Week is the entirety of the boys' varsity lacrosse squad, who, as a team, have won 7 straight in dominating fashion on both ends of the field.
