Our Town

Crozet Loses out on PRN Expansion Pro Re Nata (PRN) Brewery has acquired Skipping Rock Beer Company in Staunton, marking a significant expansion for the Crozet-based brewery. This move is necessitated by the limitations of PRN's current location, which lacks the necessary sewer infrastructure to support further growth. Considering the County just extended sewer to Montclair, its seems it could have found a compromise with PRN to keep the expansion investment (and jobs) in our community.

Crozet Park Pool

Time To Cool Off I’m sure your kids have been asking about it, but swimming at the parks and pools is finally opening up again. If you’re looking to bring your family for a swim, here are some options:

-Mint Springs Valley Park Mint Springs is open for swimming from Memorial Day weekend from 10 AM to 6 PM but won’t be open daily until June 8th. The entry fee is $2 for kids and $3 per adult. Make sure to check Albemarle County’s site for updates, as Mint Springs swimming has often been closed due to a lack of lifeguards or algae bloom outbreaks.
-Sherando Lake Recreation Area If you like swimming in nature, head across the mountain to Sherando Lake. It’s open daily from now until Labor Day, with a fee of $8 per car. Swimming is allowed during daylight hours. Be sure to get there early on weekends to secure a spot, as it gets busy.
-Old Trail Swim Club For a pool option, the Old Trail pool is open, and seasonal memberships are available, running over $1,000.
-Crozet Park Pool The Crozet Park Pool is open daily from 8 AM to 7 PM. They offer monthly memberships and a day pass for $25 per family.

Former Acme Visible Site

Environmental Update Environmental cleanup continues at the former Acme Visible Records site between Three Notch’d Road and the northern end of Eastern Avenue. The site has been undergoing efforts to address groundwater contamination since the 1990’s. Soil cleanup was completed in 2019, and recent efforts have focused on reducing groundwater pollutants including regular monitoring and additional treatments. The site is now owned by the Wilson Jones Company which is expected to file a Uniform Environmental Covenant with VDEQ and Albemarle County to restrict the property to non-residential use and prohibit the use of groundwater for drinking water. For more details, contact Sarah Huddle at (703)407-0230 or [email protected].

WAHS News and Notes

Tennis
Girls and boys varsity cleaned house against rival Albemarle, sweeping the Patriots 18 matches to 0. They each followed up that performance by routing Waynesboro, giving up nary a match.

Baseball
In perhaps their most impressive stretch this season, the Warriors blasted through Woodberry Forest, Albemarle, and Charlottesville High by a combined score of 23 to 4, pushing their record to (16-4). Junior Jack Connelly paced the offensive output by batting .500, producing 4 runs and 5 RBI.

Softball
The season, though at times bumpy, has swung the Lady Warriors' way of late. Varsity has enjoyed a three-game winning streak where they’ve outscored their opponents by a whopping 31 runs to 2.

Soccer
The boys, who finished the regular season a perfect (16-0), captured the Jefferson District title, and the girls took 2nd. Both squads have excellent odds of continued success as they march into regional and statewide competition.

Lacrosse
The girls continued their storybook, undefeated season with three dominant performances against Monticello and Charlottesville (back-to-back), boasting a 50-goal differential over those games. Sophomore goalie Maizey McCarthy only gave up 2 goals over that span — incredible!

The boys also handled the Black Knights of CHS, then followed that effort with another win over Orange, running their record to (12-3).

Crozet United’s Warrior(s) of the Week is Maizey McCarthy, the unsung sophomore hero who guards the LAX goal for the Lady Warriors.
