Price Increase for the 240/250 Roundabout – Last week, VDOT revised its cost estimate for building the long-awaited roundabout at 240/250/680. It is now expected to cost $6.9M, which is $1.7M more (32%) than was budgeted for the project just a year ago.
Project Heron (Part 2) – The response to last week’s exclusive report was exceptionally positive with great engagement. Thank you for sharing the story with your neighbors. We also received many good follow up questions, so in the upcoming issues we will answer some of the most common ones and provide you with additional context.
For instance, you asked: “What is this story really all about? Isn’t news that we are making progress toward building the Eastern Avenue Connector a good thing?” [click here to read our response]
WAHS News and Notes
Tennis
The boys and girls took home region championship trophies. The boys were led by singles champion Clark Eby, who toppled his Wilson opponent in straight sets. They followed that performance by sweeping Abingdon in the state quarters and wiping out Christiansburg in the state semis 5 games to 0.
The girls took care of their region competition, with Blythe Sturman winning the singles title and Amanda Bilchick joining Blythe to bring home the doubles championship. The ladies also followed their impressive regional performance by taking out Lord Botetourt in the state quarterfinals and moving past a tough Spotswood team in the state semis.
Lacrosse
Both the girls' and boys' squads brought home region championship trophies in relatively close matches over Meridian. The girls won 19-13, the boys 18-13.

The boys followed up their region play by taking out a tough Dominion team 9 goals to 7, and the Lady Warriors swamped Woodrow 20-4. Onto the state semis for both teams!
Soccer
The girls' and boys' squads both came through in regional play to add two more trophies to a crowded case at WAHS. The girls squeaked by Wilson Memorial 1-0, and the boys handled Turner Ashby 3-1. The state quarterfinal results (for both teams) were unknown at press time.
Track & Field
Both boys and girls varsity teams took home 2nd place in the Class 3C state championship meet. Raina Fitzwater captured the pole vault state title and was accompanied by Evie Woodrow and Helen Moak among the top 4 finishers.
Crozet United’s Warrior(s) of the Week is freshman tennis sensation Blythe Sturman, who captured the singles and doubles Region title and continues to march through state competition this week.
